How Responsive Search Ads actually use your assets

A Responsive Search Ad isn't one ad — it's a kit of parts. You supply up to 15 headlines (30-character cap each) and 4 descriptions (90 characters each), and Google assembles combinations per auction, learning which pairings convert. That changes how you should write: the 15 headlines aren't fifteen attempts at the same line, they're fifteen different angles — keyword match, benefit, price, trust signal, urgency, brand — that all have to make sense next to each other in any order.

The 30-character headline limit is brutal and non-negotiable, and it's where most hand-written RSAs die: “Professional Emergency Plumbing Services Denver” is 48 characters and will simply be rejected. “24/7 Denver Plumbers” (20) or “Upfront Plumbing Prices” (23) fit and say more. This generator writes to the caps and shows a live counter per asset so you can see exactly what survives.

Worked example — input “Emergency plumber in Denver, 24/7, licensed, upfront pricing”: strong asset sets mix headlines like “24/7 Emergency Plumber” (22), “Denver Plumbing Experts” (23), “Upfront Pricing, No Surprises” (29), “Licensed & Insured Team” (23), with descriptions like “Burst pipe at 2am? Our licensed Denver plumbers arrive fast with upfront pricing.” (83). Pin at most one headline (your brand or offer) and let the rest rotate — over-pinning is the most common way advertisers strangle their own ad strength score.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Google Ads character limits?

Headlines: 30 characters, up to 15 of them. Descriptions: 90 characters, up to 4. Display path fields: 15 each. The limits are hard — Google rejects longer assets rather than truncating them.

Do I really need all 15 headlines?

Google's own guidance: the more distinct assets, the better the ad strength and the more combinations the system can test. 8-10 genuinely different headlines beats 15 near-duplicates — this tool writes distinct angles so you can keep the best 10-15.

What is pinning and should I use it?

Pinning locks an asset to position 1, 2 or 3 so it always shows there. Use it sparingly — pin your brand or a legally-required line, at most. Pinning everything turns your RSA back into a static ad and Google scores ad strength down accordingly.

Should headlines include the search keyword?

A few should — keyword-relevant headlines lift quality score and get bolded in results. But if all 15 chase the keyword you lose the benefit/price/trust angles that actually persuade. This generator deliberately mixes keyword-led lines with the other angles.

How is this different from the Facebook ad copy generator?

Different format entirely: Facebook wants one persuasive primary text with a 125-character visible fold; Google RSAs want many short interchangeable fragments. Copy that works in one fails in the other, which is why they're separate tools with separate validators.

Can I use these assets in Performance Max too?

Yes — PMax asset groups use the same 30-character headlines and 90-character descriptions (plus long headlines at 90). Generate here, keep the strongest, and reuse the set across both campaign types.
